About the Project

MyCityApp was developed as a comprehensive digital communication and service platform for municipal authorities. Its purpose was to transform the relationship between residents and local government by replacing fragmented communication channels with one accessible, reliable and easy-to-use application.

Before the project began, residents relied on telephone calls, separate municipal websites, social media pages and physical service centers to receive information or report local issues. This created delays, duplicated requests and made it difficult for municipal departments to provide consistent updates.

The new platform created a single digital gateway through which residents could receive urgent notifications, report problems, access municipal information, participate in local initiatives and communicate directly with relevant departments.

Client Objectives

The municipality wanted to create a modern digital service experience that would improve transparency, strengthen community engagement and make everyday municipal interactions faster and more convenient.

The main objectives included establishing a direct two-way communication channel, delivering location-based updates in real time, reducing pressure on municipal call centers, improving the handling of resident requests and increasing public participation in local decision-making.

User Experience Strategy

The user experience was designed around the most common actions residents perform: receiving updates, reporting an issue, checking the status of a request, finding municipal information and discovering local events.

A clear navigation system, large action buttons, readable typography and simplified forms were used to reduce friction. Residents could personalize the application according to neighborhood, areas of interest and preferred notification categories.

The platform also included multilingual support and accessibility adaptations to help ensure that municipal information and digital services remained available to the widest possible audience.

Core Features

The application includes a centralized notification center for emergency messages, road closures, public works, weather alerts, school updates and community announcements. Notifications can be sent to all residents or targeted according to neighborhood, street, audience group or selected interests.

A digital service-request portal allows residents to report issues such as damaged infrastructure, sanitation problems, streetlight failures, parking concerns and public-space maintenance. Users can attach photographs, add location details and follow the request from submission through completion.

The events calendar provides information about cultural events, sports activities, educational programs, public meetings and community initiatives. Residents can filter activities, save events and receive reminders before an event begins.

The application also provides access to municipal forms, public documents, payment services, contact details, operating hours and frequently requested information. Surveys and digital polls enable local authorities to gather public feedback and involve residents in planning and policy discussions.

Municipal Administration Portal

A dedicated management portal was developed for municipal employees. The portal allows authorized teams to publish content, create targeted notifications, manage resident requests, monitor service levels and analyze engagement data.

Each municipal department can manage its own content and service requests while operating within a unified workflow. Role-based permissions ensure that employees only have access to the tools and data relevant to their responsibilities.

Dashboards provide real-time visibility into open requests, response times, recurring issues, neighborhood trends, notification performance and resident participation.

Service Request Management

Every resident report is automatically categorized and routed to the appropriate department. Municipal teams can assign responsibility, update the request status, add internal notes and communicate progress directly to the resident.

Automated notifications keep residents informed when a request is received, assigned, updated or completed. This reduces uncertainty and improves trust by giving residents clear visibility into the municipality’s response.

Geographic clustering also enables municipal managers to identify repeated reports in the same location, combine duplicate requests and recognize infrastructure problems that require broader intervention.

Personalization and Location-Based Services

Residents can customize the application according to their neighborhood, street, family needs and preferred topics. This ensures that each user receives relevant information without being overwhelmed by unnecessary notifications.

Location-based functionality allows the municipality to send targeted alerts about temporary traffic changes, maintenance work, local events, public safety notices and disruptions affecting a specific area.

Residents can also use an interactive map to view public facilities, recycling points, parking areas, municipal offices, emergency services, playgrounds and active infrastructure projects.

Integrations

The platform was designed to integrate with existing municipal systems rather than replace them. Connections were created with CRM platforms, geographic information systems, payment gateways, content-management systems and service-request databases.

Challenges

Another challenge involved connecting the application with legacy municipal systems that were not originally designed for real-time mobile communication. A flexible integration layer was required to synchronize information while preserving the stability of existing infrastructure.

Scalability was equally important. The platform needed to remain stable during emergencies, major public announcements and other periods when notification volume and user activity could increase dramatically.

Our Solution

We created a modular cloud-based architecture that allows the platform to grow according to the municipality’s needs. New services, departments and integrations can be added without rebuilding the entire system.

The interface was tested with residents from different age groups and technological backgrounds. Based on user feedback, we simplified key processes, reduced the number of required steps and improved the clarity of forms, notifications and status updates.

Forms were designed to minimize typing and reduce complexity, while error messages provide clear instructions for correcting missing or incorrect information.

The platform can also support multiple languages, enabling municipalities to communicate more effectively with diverse communities and provide equal access to important public information.

Security and Privacy

The application uses encrypted communication and secure authentication to protect personal and municipal information. Access to administrative tools is managed according to employee roles and responsibilities.

Sensitive actions are recorded in audit logs, enabling administrators to review changes and maintain accountability. Data retention and privacy settings can be configured according to municipal policies and applicable regulatory requirements.

The architecture also separates public content from protected operational data, reducing risk and helping municipal teams manage information securely.

Implementation Process

The project began with stakeholder interviews involving municipal managers, service-center employees, department representatives and residents. These sessions helped identify common communication problems, service bottlenecks and high-priority use cases.
